I Had Total Knee Replacement Surgery 3 Months Ago; However, My Knee Continues To Be Swollen, Edema, And I Have Developed Itching. My Dr. Is Clueless. I Have Been Assuming That The Swelling Is A Result Of The Surgery, Could I Have Lupus?

Hi! It is February 21st, 2010 and I hate my TKR late July, 2009. The first two months I was pretty swollen...at the fifth month I was still slightly swollen, today it just itches several times a day. Keep up with exercises, push yourself a bit going up and down stairs. I was riding horses at seven weeks just on ibuprofen. It wasn't always easy but the swelling will get better. Talk to your doctor, talk to another doctor, find reassurance and good advice. Ice, ice ice!!! I'm so very glad I did this..next I'm back on my downhill  skis. Keep your weight down too and keep up good oral hygiene. I'm 54, I've got maybe ninety-five percent of my range of motion back but each day does get better.!

Ask to be referred back to the consultant who did the operation. He is the expert. You know the consultants name - phone his secretary and ask the question or write to him. Sometimes I feel doctors are cold and coughs merchants.

You should try going to a different doctor because your doctor might not want to find anything wrong with his surgery that he did. Other doctors would be honest and would really try to find the problem.....good luck.
P.S. I might have knee surgery too

Thank you, I appreciate your comment. I have the same concern, that the doctor screwed something up, but doesn't want to admit to it. He just acts like...I don't know what is going on! Since you are thinking about knee surgery, be sure to check out your doctor thoroughly! Personally, I wouldn't go through it again!

Recovering from a knee replacement takes about a year.  It is normal for the replaced knee to swell and ache.  I had mine done in 2001, today 2009, I'm comfortable, walking with some difficulty using stairs.  The best advise I can give, keep icing your knee when it swells,  do your exercises for about 6-7 months.  The itching is part of the healing process and will go away.
My best source of information was "www.delphi.com" the knee or joint replacement forum.  Those good folks walked every step of the way with me.  They answered all of my questions.  Without the support of the forum my recovery would have been much more difficult.

I have been diagnosed with RSD (Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy) since my knee replacement in February 2009. The pain is diibilitating and has taken control of my life. Just getting through the day is often all I can do. I have had seven epidurals. I am now looking at having a morphine pump installed January 6th. Has anyone had success with the pain pumps with this type oif diagnosis?

I had my knee replaced last Jan 12 th and now five months later mine is still swollen too and Dr say thats normal and will be for about 1 year after surgery. Mine took away a lot of pain but lost a lot of motion in bending and straightening out and locking in when walking. Still have some strange pains from it . Also have seen a lot of people complaining on here about thier knee replacement so not sure what is up so you're not alone here

Thank you for your comment! Are you having trouble walking and still in pain, because I am. My surgery was Feb. 19th. The doctor asperated my knee about a month ago because of fluid buildup and I've had trouble with hematomas.

I had a knee replacement several years ago. Don't panic,it takes a year or more for it to totally heal. You just have to keep up with the therapy and push yourself a little. Use ice on the swelling as much as possible.I was told not to use heat that often, because heat only causes more swelling . The day will come when you will notice that your new knee actually will feel normal. Good luck.

I do know you have scar tissue from the surgery and this can be bothersome, speak to your doctor concerning this,I'm not concerned that he acts baffled....the best to you perhaps fluid pills and propping the leg up when sitting.....the best to you
