There are lots of things that can make your throat feel tight when you swallow - and the treatment will be different, depending on what’s causing it!

Anxiety
I usually get a tight feeling in my throat when I swallow when I’m stressed - it’s a common symptom of anxiety.

If you’re prone to panic attacks, or have been under a lot of stress lately, then that might be why it feels as if there’s something stuck in your throat.

Acid Reflux
Acid reflux, also known as GERD, can also make it feel as if there’s something stuck in your throat.

If you’ve got acid reflux, you might also be experiencing some of the following:

  • Heartburn
  • Sore throat
  • Chest pain
  • Nausea
  • Trouble keeping your food down
Allergies
Some allergies, like hay-fever or pet allergies, can also irritate your throat. If it feels a bit swollen or tickly, and you’ve got a runny nose as well, try taking an antihistamine tablet - this should sort your problem out!

What Should I Do If It Doesn't Go Away?
If the feeling in your throat persists over a period of several weeks, you should probably go and see your doctor. It won’t do any harm to get it checked out, and it might be something that can be solved with a dose of cheap over-the-counter medicine!

If less than a week, it's likely viral. Gargle with salt-water, take vitamin C and zinc lozenges. If it's more than a week, you need to see a doctor.
