While a metal taste in the mouth is not directly associated with liver disease, a metallic or bitter taste can be a symptom of jaundice - the primary symptom of liver disease.

Anyone who has noticed this symptom shouldn't jump to conclusions or worry unnecessarily, especially if it is the only symptom identified. For peace of mind though, it would be a good idea to contact a health professional should any of the following symptoms also present themselves:

- Yellowish discoloration of the skin (or bronzening) and a yellow tint to the whites of the eyes

- Darkenening of the urine (an orange or red shade)

- Loss of appetite

- A discoloration and furry growth on the tongue

- Stools may appear unusually pale and/or unusually pungent

- Nausea

- Itchy skin

- Lethargy
