Growth of the nail is due to its root called matrix which is under the skin and not visible. Matrix produces soft cells which make the nail plate. During growth of these soft cells, they become flat by loosing inner material and become hard and translucent. So nail plat keep moving forward by  more cells production by the matrix and loosing the inner material. (Rail & Groove effect).
