We found that according to the ICD-9 Code, problems to do with the liver come under 573 whilst Mass and Nodule of the liver are both coded more specifically to 573.8. According to the ICD-9 Code Mass does not come under 573.8, rather it comes under 573.9 but if you identify it as a more specific disorder it notes to go to 573.8.

  • Who is this used by, and what does the acronym stand for?

The ICD-9 Code is used all over the world by medical practitioners. It stands for 'International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems'. It is an index that is used to identify symptoms causes of illness and diseases. It was first published in 1893 by the International Statistical Institute. Created to identify the causes and trends of mortalities it was then promoted and revised by the WHO and became an international initiative to analyze world trends. It has been beneficial in identifying the spread of diseases and pandemics.

It works by assigning a health condition a unique category with a code, like the one mentioned above. These identification codes are up to six characters long and help to link similar diseases to each other based on the symptoms. The beauty of the systems is that it can be accessed by anyone in any language because of it universal coding system and the doctor can start to treat the patient even if they do not speak the same language.

The ICD-9 Code is a recognised index and the details of the diagnosis can be used for reimbursement systems and automated decision support.

  • Does the index ever become obsolete?

Yes. The WHO are continuing to update and make accessible the latest version of the index, ICD-11, by 2015. As new discoveries and developments are made the index has to be revised in order to maintain the most accurate records for diagnosis.
