Just as a matter of interest, is there anyway to prevent PTSD? I know some never get it while some only have it affect them weeks/months/years after an event I am just curious to know if it can be prevented at all?

I wish there was a way but alas, there isn't. I've suffered from it for over forty years. Most days and nights, it doesn't bother me and then something will click and it's like a deluge. I've seen V.A. Experts and many others but nothing cures it. Too many old memories or even certain sounds like a helicopter will trigger it off with me for days sometimes. Something that will go with me to my grave.

Not to prevent it ... No.

But recent studies have shown that people who have lots of community support, suffer less PTSD than those without.

For example: Since WW2, American "indians" going back to reservations had more community/family support and suffered less PTSD than American soldiers going back to "regular" society.

I read that the sufferer of PTSD  needs to recognize and avoid unwise coping strategies that cause further harm. These include use of illicit drugs and overindulgence in alcoholic beverages.

Although alcohol and drugs may give promise of temporary relief, they soon make matters worse. They usually contribute to social isolation, rejection of the people who want to help, workaholism, uncontrolled anger, uncontrolled or overcontrolled eating, or other self-destructive behavior.
