Why is he waking up? You need to understand what is waking him in order to fix the problem.

Gator is right. The same thing happens with my son. We realized he had separation anxiety because daddy was a truck driver. He is doing better now but daddy is no longer a truck driver. I hope your little one feels better soon.

It's far too hard to tell what is causing his poor sleep habits .. It could range from food intake (especially stimulants like sugar) to anxiety. It is very individualistic.  You need to pay attention and perhaps experiment a little with trying different things.  Some suggestions:  A warm bath before bed, soft music playing, darken the room (no nightlights), warm pjs or cool pjs (depending on the appropriate temp in his room) -- this is often what wakes up small children at night, they may start off nice and cozy warm, but either kick off their blankets and get chilled - which will very likely wake them up because they are uncomfortable ..or .. The exact opposite, they will get too hot and uncomfortable  .. Things like that.

Sleep patterns are much like potty training .. they are very individualistic and children adapt at different rates than others.  At  two, it may simply just be something he will eventually grow out of, it's anyone's guess.
