Is It Safe To Travel To Cancun Due To The Swine Flu Outbreak?

I don't think so. We just returned from Cancun via a Norwegian cruise (leaving Easter Sunday). We went to Carlos and Charley's and got in the Conga line and drank from the bottle. I am VERY upset that the Mexican government KNEW about this outbreak but failed to notify other countries (at least that is what we are told). I am not sick nor is my husband but after we returned home, we immediately connected with family and friends. If I had made them sick, I would never forgive myself. So should you travel to Cancun? Let's put it this way, don't wait for YOUR government to tell you what to do. Obviously, this could become a VERY serious threat, especially if it mutates which one official from the CDC is terrified of (his own words). It's not worth the risk to yourself or your family. Mexico is denying that there are ANY outbreaks in Cancun. Really? So explain why the students in New York who were in Cancun are sick. Trust your gut not your government.

FEAR!!!!!
I am booked to leave in 2 days, bring it on!!!!6 people in Canada returned with symptoms, much less than 1 percent of travelers, travelers that , drank alcohol all day and made out with as many people as they could get their hands on. All of whom recovered. It seems to me we are basically immune to the new strain of the flew.
What I cannot believe is that so few people are returning with symptoms.....considering everyone who went must now be overly concerned and contacting their doctors  at the slightest sniffle. Consider the tourist destinations much safer, but the risk is real I guess......just like that bird flu that never happened!

Cancun has not been hit by the flu yet , the students in ny that got sick flew from cancun to mexico city and thats how they got sick . If you decide to cancel do so , but if your that worried about it I wouldnt suggest planning on going some where else for your vacation as you might be able to get sick there too.

There are students in new york who went to cancun but they have not confirmed that they are the ones who brought it back to the USand if you aren't going to travel to a country with swine flu then too late cause it is in the US :p mexico city is farther away from cancun than probably new york, california, and kansas are to you right now and you aren't freaked out.I am going to cancun on wednesday and am not too worried. We are going to be deep in the hotel zone and plan on wearing masks in the airport on the way home. Just take precautions and you will be fine. Most of the symptoms are mild just like a regular flu that sweeps through schools all the time.

I'm going to cancun mid-july and I'm worried about swine flu. Cancelling now might mean I don't get a refund though so I'm hoping its all over by then but I guess any holidays from june onwards are just going to have to wait and see if swine flu gets better or worse

Why risk life? Your body cannot fight an animal virus. Your body does not have natural immunity to this virus. Don't be stupid...... Cancel your trip. Your putting yourself, your family and your country at risk.

I'm going to cancun Memorial Day weekend, and I'm thinking about just cancelling and going somewhere else.  But then again, I've been planning this for the last couple of months, and I really want to go.  I'm just scared and don't want to get sick.

I am leaving for Cancun on May 5th for 10 days and I am worried, but there are worse things out there to catch. There is a cure, it is just the flu, and those who have died are from Mexico, as far as I know, which makes sense in a way. It is so densely populated in Mexico city that any common cold could be passed around, and wealth is not exactly flowing. Deaths, in my opinion, are probably due to people not paying attention to symptoms or not having the health care to get a vaccine for it. And as for the New York case, it is not OFFICIALLY decided whether the students came from Cancun or not. If this flu is as contagious as it is made out to be, they may have caught it in the airports, not necessarily Cancun. Wash your hands frequently, try to not get too obscenely drunk if your in Cancun to party so you can try and be a little conscious of the people around you, and wear a mask if you plan on going into busy markets or airports. Right now it is not labeled as a pandemic, which the news has announced as of tonight, April 27. People are worrying and becoming afraid before there needs to be that kind of reaction.

It's GREAT to see so many answers, and to those that have said they are still coming to Cancun... Great Choice !!!

FEAR is the NEW Terror Weapon.. We have seen this since 9/11

Fear to Travel, Anthrax, fear of drugs cartels in Mexico, Swine flu... Whatever next ???

There are not hundreds of people dying in the streets of Cancun as many of the Tabloids would have you believe, I know, I am British and have lived here in CANCUN for 4 years now. I have my family here including my 1 year old baby girl. I am not frightened to walk the streets of Cancun, to mix with other people in the night clubs and bars, to meet people in the hotels because I know that my personal hygiene is excellent, and this has been a HUGE Media Scare tactic.

The Whole world is in Economic Meltdown at the moment, so what better way to try and kick start the economy by mass producing drugs, scaring everybody so that they take holidays in their own Country instead of taking their money overseas...

The whole of the Mexican Tourist Industry is in tatters because of all this False reporting !! I don't know one person in Cancun with this flu, I don't know of anybody who knows anybody with this Flu and all of my clients who have been in Cancun and returned home have not got this FLU... So... The odds are actually greater that you will catch and die from the Normal Seasonal Flu.... 35,000 in the USA alone last year !!!

I know where my money would take me !!! Cancun, Caribbean Beach, Sunshine and a Great Party !!

I'm scheduled to leave for Cancun this coming Sunday. The main outbreak is in Mexico City and that's far away from Cancun...I feel like people and the media are blowing this up way bigger then it needs to be...just be precocious and aware of your surroundings. The swine flu is the US now as well, so you can easily get it here. It doesn't sound too dangerous, and infected people are recovering...So I'm going to go to Cancun and enjoy my vacation...that's that.

Swine flu is been around for years, since 1976 in fort dix, new jersey. In 1988 there were multiple infections in wisconsin. You right the government knows how to hide stuff.  If you are scared to go to cancun do not go just stay in your home because you wont be able to go anywhere. The swine flu is everywhere. I'm going in june and just like here I'll just be careful.

My wife and I are scheduled to go to cancun may 7th for our dream vacation. You know the vacation, the one you've always wanted to go on. Well this swine flu crap is really starting to get annoying. I understand the risks, but we planned this, there is no going back. Reschedule for when? Hurricane season? I don't think so! We are going unless they physically shut everything down and not allow us into country. The kids from nyc  got to cancun through mexico city. There are no outbreaks of any kind in cancun, and all the articles I have read, life appears to be normal in cancun. I just wish there was more info as far as what is all being shut sown in mexico. Will I be able to go to xcaret and chichen itza? I hope so, cause that is part of the vacation.

They actually died from catching strep while they had the flu, with their immunity suppressed. So it wasn't really the flu that killed them.

Hahaah this is too funny.. All these answers.. My family and I are leaving May24th and we feel the same way most of the folks here do!! WE ARE GOING!! I mean this thing has not even hit 1,000 world wide.. Hello does anyone know what the pop. Is... And we are freaking out about a few 100.. Give me a break.. This year alone in the U.S. 16,000 people have died of the common flu... Hmmm no freak out then.. How many people have died of this flu in the U.S. 1 child from Mexico... Not that that child was not important.. But my point is why freak out about a flu..... GO ON VACATION AND HAVE A GOOD TIME..weird how when the media gets wind of something they run with it.. Weird how a month ago the big threat was the drug wars.. What happened to all of that.. What they all catch the flu and go into a hole in the ground or what.. See what I mean about the media.. In tow weeks they will have something else to talk about and we will have all moved on to something else...
