When kidneys fail, they can fail in one of two ways.  One way is called high output kidney failure in which the kidneys cannot concentrate the urine and the patient passes out copious volumes of dilute urine, causing dehydration.  The other way is low output kidney failure in which the kidneys cannot form any urine and the patient bloats up with excess water and unexcreted waste.
