They fill up the entire thorax, except the mediastinum (the central "block" where the heart and great vessels sit). They extend from right up behind your collar bones (and slightly above even, in that dent), all the way from front to back, down to the diaphragm, which is at the level where your ribcage stops.
They lie behind the ribcage.
