Eyelashes which grow downwards are not that uncommon.

In extreme cases (where the lashes make contact with, and irritate the eye) the problem can be solved through minor surgery.

Eyelashes growing downwards All eyelashes are different, so don't be freaked out if yours veer downwards slightly.

However, you should be concerned if the slope of your eyelashes is so extreme that they curl back into your eye and cause friction and scratching.

This can lead to corneal damage (not to mention a lot of irritation), and needs to be treated by a doctor.

The condition that causes eyelashes to curl into the eye is called congenital entropion. This is basically a slight deviation of the eyelid's position, and causes eyelashes to curl inwards.

This problem can be treated with surgery, and your best bet is to consult your doctor about what steps to take.

Why are my eyelashes curling downwards? Some women (and men) who have downward-curling eyelashes often complain that the condition makes it almost impossible for them to wear mascara.

My recommendation for people that have this type of cosmetic problem is to try out a waterproof mascara.  This will set quickly and hold the upward flick of your eyelashes better, and for longer!

Trichiasis is a condition in which the eyelids grow in a misdirected fashion.

They can be removed to stop scratching of the eye, or your eye doctor can fit in a special contact lens to stop the rubbing.
