Following are the four main features which help alveoli do their job well:
1: They are made of a very thin epithelium layer and extracellular matrix. Thin epithelium helps in exchanging the gases easily.
2: The alveolar wall has three types of cells, one of them called Macrophages act as disinfectant and kill harmful germs and bacteria.
3: The seconds type of cells pour out surfactant to cope with the air and water pressure in the lungs. They also reduce the water surface tension.
4: They are very small in size and increase the surface area of the lungs, thus enable lungs to exchange more gases while having a small size.

- Gas exchange for lungs
- Diffusion of oxygen and CO2
- Production of surfactant, which reduces tension at different volumes.
