Following are the four main features which help alveoli do their job well:
They are made of a very thin epithelium layer and extracellular matrix. Thin epithelium helps in exchanging the gases easily.
The alveolar wall has three types of cells, one of them called Macrophages act as disinfectant and kill harmful germs and bacteria.
The seconds type of cells pour out surfactant to cope with the air and water pressure in the lungs. They also reduce the water surface tension.
They are very small in size and increase the surface area of the lungs, thus enable lungs to exchange more gases while having a small size.
