The simple answer to can human get Distemper is no. Humans cannot get Distemper. It can be passed from dog to dog but it cannot be caught by humans.

  • What is Distemper?
Distemper is an infection which most animals can suffer from. The most common one that most people will more likely refer to is Canine Distemper Virus or CDV. This is a viral infection that affects the respiratory and digestive system. If it is not treated then not only could CDV be passed on to other dogs by small droplets in the air but it can also get a lot worse and affect the central nervous system and optic nerve and can even affect neurological system. At its worst, CDV is fatal and so should be treated as soon as you think your dog or animal may have it.

  • Symptoms of Distemper
Some of the symptoms of Distemper are:

  • the virus will appear  on the bronchial lymph nodes and tonsils to begin with
  • fever
  • runny nose
  • discharge running from eye
  • not eating
  • dehydration
  • vomiting
  • diarrhea
  • coughing
  • labored breathing
  • excessive salivation
These are just a selection of symptoms and there are many more that could indicate he or she has CDV. If you are ever worried that your pet may have distemper or if they are showing any of the symptoms then the best thing to do would be take them to the vet straight away to be checked out because the sooner it is the caught the less likely that any serious complications will happen.

Canine distemper is a highly contagious disease of wild and domestic carnivores. Distemper is caused by a virus that has a broad host range among North American carnivores including the gray fox, raccoons, coyotes, skunks, and weasels. Canine distemper virus is related to rubeola (red measles) but poses no known threat to humans.

If my dog has distemper, stopped eating yesterday, started puking yesterday, is it to late for him to be treated or does he have a chance of full recovery? He's going to be 8 years old, vomited all night long, every hour or two, not eating at all today or yesterday

I don't believe it is contagious, but if an animal with distemper bites you, you are susceptible!
