We are all born with ego. Ego is the sense of self, and some people develop a very large ego that interferes with a realistic sense of self pride and self importance, to the point that it becomes dysfunctional for the individual and interferes with interactions with others, due to the over emphasis on and esteeming of the self.

Self respect, on the other hand, implies a realistic assessment of one's abilities, attributes, accomplishments, and challenges. Self respect is not only more moderate and temperate, but also lends itself to a confidence that serves the individual, rather than interferes with it. Self respect is not an exaggerated assessment of the self, but a moderate and objective view in relationship to the importance of oneself.

Yes, I think I get your meaning here. When someone else says a thing, we may interpret that hurtfully (and they may also intend it so), and this resulting hurt feeling is our ego being hurt; it is our interpretation of how someone ELSE regards us. Yet we all have the choice to allow or disallow our egos to become involved in another's actions toward us; how someone else behaves is not a matter of our SELF respect. Self respect is the image of how we esteem ourselves, while ego that interprets harm is the image of how someone ELSE sees us or regards us.

Ego is kinda -ve attribute. Self respect is positive one. Ego is a notion of pride and arrogance. When a person see others as inferior. Ego is also called as self-importance. Whereas, self respect is when a person avoid being inferior to others. He perceive himself as a being equal to everyone.

Ego= no respect for others
self respect = respect of everyone including self.
