Swollen feet and ankles can either be the result of a localized injury or they can be a symptom of a systemic condition affecting the whole body. If the swelling is only on one side of the body, then it is most likely that you have suffered an injury or infection to that particular part of the body.
However, if swelling occurs on both sides of the body, then it is likely that this is a result of a disease affecting the whole body, such as heart disease, kidney or liver failure. People suffering from one of these conditions will often experience an excess fluid build-up that can often be concentrated in the legs and feet. This build-up of fluid is often referred to as edema. Swelling of the feet and ankles can also occur when a person's veins become obstructed, as can commonly happen to pregnant or obese people. Joint diseases such as arthritis can also affect the joints of the ankle and foot and cause swelling.
How you go about treating the swelling depends on the cause of the problem. When the problem is localized, anti-inflammatory medication is commonly used to treat the swelling. However, if the swelling is the result of a systemic problem, then you should see your doctor. They will then be able to advise you on how best to treat the problem.

The swelling of the ankles, feet - legs is commonly referred to as peripheral edema.  This condition is prevalent in many situations including, Prolonged standing ,Long airplane flights or automobile rides, during Menstrual periods quite common among (women) Pregnancy excessive swelling may be a sign of pre-eclampsia), a serious condition sometimes called toxemia, that includes high blood pressure and swelling. Also being overweight among others.

It is important to understand that Swollen legs may indicate sign of heart failure, poor kidney perfusion and liver failure. During this time, there is too much fluid in the body. The specific treatment will be prescribed based on the underlying cause and preferably diuretics may be prescribed. Also avoid wearing tight clothing, Exercise regularly and Lose weight if you need to. In my opinion, avoid standing without moving for prolonged periods of time and seek medical advise as soon as possible. Hope this can help. Good luck.

Swelling in feet and amkles occur mainly if there is kidney problem. Its just a reflection that the kidney is not functioning properly. Hope your is not because of this, because if it is the case then it must be in a serious condition. Notice whether you have formed eye bags as well. And also whether you have any problem urinating. Whatever it is, do see a doc soon. Good luck.

Swollen feet and ankles are NOT always a sign of heart or kidney problems. Adema and swelling are 2 different things. Adema is wide spread and chronic, where as swelling is transient and usually localized. When I eat fast food or something high in sodium, my feet and ankles will swell the next day.  The swelling can also be contributed to humidity or possibly your monthly cycle. Try an over the counter water pill to reduce the swelling. If that doesn't help then ask your doctor for prescription water pills; they work quickly. If your swelling is more than just your feet and ankles then your doctor might want to run some tests to see if there might be something other than your sodium intake. Remember... Sodium is in EVERYTHING... Read labels and ask the doctor how much sodium you should consume each day.

Are you on your feet a lot? Or do a lot of sitting, try putting your feet up instead of letting them hang all the time.

Edema, water retention. Go for long walks and drink 8 glasses of spring water daily. Garlic is good too. Allicin, the active ingredient in garlic is destroyed within one hour of smashing the garlic. This means that garlic pills are virtually worthless and should not be used.
Instead, when you use the garlic, compress it with a spoon prior to swallowing it, or put it through your juicer to add to vegetable juice. Just be careful not to put too much as raw garlic has a powerful flavor and can cause some unpleasant surprises. A single medium size clove or two is usually sufficient.
Do the above for a week and see if you are better. Certain medications can cause this too, or high blood pressure.

The guest gave a very good answer, would only add one more thing.
It is difficult to know for sure why your feet are swelling without seeing a doctor.
Swelling of the feet and/or legs can sometimes be due to heart problems.
If the problem persists, would be good to make a dr. Appointment.
It is most likely water retention/Edema, but best to be safe.
Good luck to you.

You have to let us know-what can make your feet swell. Is it just sitting in a chair, or is it from some medication, anything else you need to know for us to give you an answer to.
