Axonal neuropathy also called distal axonopathy or axonopathy is kind of peripheral neuropathy resulting from metabolic derangement of peripheral nervous system neuron. Some metabolic diseases like diabetes and kidney failure are common causes. Malnutrition, alcoholism and toxic effects of the drugs are other reasons. In this condition, distal part of the axon degenerate and axonal atrophy grow slowly towards the cell body. This condition can also be congenital and inherited.
Treatment of axonopathy depends upon underlying  cause. E.g. If the cause is alcoholism and  drugs then stopping alcohol and drugs and treating their symptoms can also treat axonopathy. If the cause is diabetes then managing diabetes can also treat axonopathy. But little can be done for congenital and inherited axonopathy.
