Having herpes does not automatically mean mean that you have HIV, but it is certainly worth taking a test, as you have exposed yourself to the risk of sexually transmitted infection.

You can see your doctor for this, visit a specialist clinic, or even buy a test on the internet to do it in the privacy of your own home.

Herpes and HIV together can be a problem as one will worsen the symptoms of the other. You should be aware that as you have herpes, you are more likely to contract HIV, so please be careful who you have sex with and that you take the necessary precautions.

Once you have herpes, it stays in your body forever. It will remain inactive for some time after the first outbreak, but you may have up to 5 outbreaks per year for a few years.

Things that trigger the outbreak are similar to the other type of herpes - cold sores. A cold or flu will often make the herpes flareup, as will stress or a new sexual partner.

Get tested for HIV as soon as possible though, I know it won't be good news if you do have it, but it's best to know and at least then you can get treatment.

Good luck!
