Because your body and brain need some down time and time to re-charge yourself. Sleep is a very important function for a fit and healthy mind and body. While you sleep, your organs do their job of cleansing the inside of you also! Very important for your body to sleep.

Your body needs rest, we all know that, but what is the benefit of sleep as opposed to just lying down?

Until now, scientists aren't 100% sure, although I believe there is strong evidence to suggest that going to sleep helps your brain "reorganize" your thoughts and memories, which could also explain dreams as a side-effect of that activity.
