Of course, we believe there was (and still is) a reservoir of the virus in the animal population dating from (probably) back many centuries, even possibly millennia.

Oh yes for sure. There probably is no way of knowing with absolute certainty where it originated exactly.

The US tested it on people in parts of Africa thinking it was harmless and the virus spread rapidly and killed.
