You are not taking care of yourself but not showering, eating or drinking enough fluids. If you cannot or will not take care of yourself you can be taken in for a mental evaluation. My guess is your parents called as a last resort.
I'm 26, and I live with my parents. I want to know how the police were able to take me to a mental health clinic against my will. I was not showering, I was not eating, and was dehydrated. I have committed no crimes. Can anyone elaborate?
The answer is in your question. You needed additional assistance. I wouldn't want anyone in my house with the issues you were /are having. Embrace the fact they love you and were concern to seek help for you. Now learn to take care of yourself.
If they feel you are a danger to yourself, they can take you to a psych hold for 72 hours for observation. I think its called a 5150 hold. If you are 26, get a job and an apartment and live your life.
It really depends on the state you are living in. The people who answered above have some bits of truth to their answers but are not completely correct.
I was your age living on my own in a condo I bought after graduating from University with two bachelor degrees, running my own business for over 7 years successfully, just bought a new truck etc. The list goes on.
In the state of NC anyone can go to the magistrate and say whatever they want and have an individual involuntarily committed.
I was swarmed by the SWAT team and had the ATF and about every police officer in my city come visit my residence that evening.
I was not as lucky as yourself. I was held in the local ER for 5 days before being transferred to a state mental facility on Christmas Eve where I was forced to spend a month.
The real kicker, the parent who did the involuntary commitment, I had just went to the doctor with to make sure they didn't put them in a mental hospital. Then a month later that parent had me committed. About a year after the parent had me committed the same parent attempted suicide. The parent was the one who needed to be there, not myself.
Not showering, not eating and drinking are not valid reasons for an IVC. I hope you were released relatively quickly.
I would take steps to gain independence and distance from your parents if they did that.
I would encourage you to try and focus on any positives of the experience that you can and take those away and forget the negative. It is done and in the past, learn from it and move on.
