I am the mother of a five year old son and seven year old daughter. When ever they are sick, which, fortunately, is not that often, I check their temperature the old-fashioned way - in the rectum. It is the most accurate method. It is done in private, in the bedroom, with the door closed. I have my child lie down on the bed on his/her tummy. The jammy bottoms and underpants/panties come down. The thermometer is lubed up with vaseline. His/her cheeks are parted; the anal region cleaned with a baby wipe. The thermometer is slowly glided in as deep as possible before it stops. I generally wait about three minutes. While waiting, I lovingly rub/massage their hiney cheeks. After which, I slowly withdraw it and look at the readings. Then, underpants/panties come up followed by the jammy bottoms. During the time when I am waiting, my son/daughter lie still and quiet. They know I am trying to make them better. They both know I love them.
