Because your nervous system is malfunctioning. And this is yet another symptom of it. A very common symptom, sometimes considered highly diagnostic. It can be quite painful and even debilitating.
PD sufferers usually find that the toe-curling (more like reflexive toe-clenching) gets worse at certain times of day or when trying to walk. Being prescribed Eldepryl and Sinemet CR may increase the chances of this symptom occurring. It's hypothesised that the mechanism causing the toe-curling happens is malfunction in the basal ganglia (the brain center for automatic movement). This leads to dystonia: twisting and curling of muscles.
Spasms in the calf can also lead to clenched toe-curling in PD sufferers. This is more likely to happen after walking or when generally tired.
If the toe-curling is a problem at night many PD sufferers swear by having an electric blanket or even a hot water bottle on the feet; this seems to help persuade the muscles to relax.
