Ahh, nostalgia. That funny yearning for days gone by. The childhood fads and trends that make you go 'oh, I remember that' with a group of friends. Well, fads in 1998 were heavy on the ground like most years, in fashion, toys, music, and games. So sit back and cast your mind to the age of viagra, The Royle Family and Furbies.
So that's just a choice selection of some of the fads and trends of 1998. But there are many more to explore, how many can you remember?
- Viagra: Developed and widely available for the first time on the markets of 1998, men with sexual dysfunction could dysfunction no more with this little blue pill.
- Beanie Babies: These glorified bean bags-cum-animal shaped cuddly toys grew to their multi-million dollar collecting industry status.
- Yo-yos: Bounced back from the dark recesses of unpopular culture with their gear spinning, light flashing and dynamo inclusive reinventions. Before falling back after a few years. Much like a yo-yo then.
- Furbies: Tamagotchi's started the virtual pet craze, but this talking-pet-gremlin-type-THING, took it to the next level. Led to mothers fighting each other in the Christmas sales.
- The Royle Family: This now classic British sitcom about the TV guzzling Royle Family started life back in the annually retentive echo that is 1998, and has grown in strength ever since then.
- Designer pregnancy: Most of the Spice Girls and just about anyone who was anyone who was also a minor celebrity was wearing a maternity gown this year.
- Sarongs: The fashionably questionable David Beckham, at the height of his fame, stunned the small minority of the public who actually cared, with his wraparound monstrosity of a sarong. Haven't seen them since, and for good reason.
