Metronidazole is not a cure for Chlamydia. The drug can be used as an effective cure for other complaints, whilst Chlamydia is curable using different drugs.

  • Metronidazole
The drug is used as an antibiotic for anaerobic bacteria and protozoa. It can be used in gel form to treat rosacea and tumors. One of the most common uses of metronidazole is for the treatment of bacterial vaginosis. This is a common complaint in women who are sexually active, but it is not a sexually transmitted disease. The symptoms include a white discharge from the vagina after sex. The condition is tested for by taking a swab from the vagina, and is caused by multiplying bacteria after taking antibiotics.

  • Chlamydia
This disease is the most common sexually transmitted infection and is caused by the bacteria Chlamydia trachomatis. The infection affects the genitalia and the eyes of the sufferer and can cause serious long-term health problems if it is left untreated. There are a number of approved treatments for the disease and these include Azithromycin, Doxycycline and Tetracycline. All of these treatments last for up to 14 days and are taken orally.

It is advised that Chlamydia is tested for, as in a large number of cases there are no recognizable symptoms. There are an estimated 1 million people who suffer from the infection in the United States each year, and testing is being pushed to the forefront to reduce this figure. The disease is most common in those people under the age of 25, and women seem to be more likely to contract the infection than men.

Chlamydia are bacteria which can cause infection in the genital tract because these are transmitted sexually. This infection is treated with antibiotics like azithromycin, erythromycin and doxycycline. Treatment can be of 5-10 days.  Metronidazole are not used to treat this infection.  If this infection is not treated in females on time then it can lead to pelvic inflammatory disease.
