I get very itchy where my socks are after removing them, mostly in the summer. I am wondering if it can be because the socks are ribbed and leave a temporary ribbed pattern on my legs.

This looks like contact allergy. Allergy is the abnormal response of immune system against a normal substance. The socks are normal but your immune system is not accepting them. So change the socks with other one with different material like if you are wearing synthetic socks then wear cotton socks.

I also think it could be an allergic reaction, but not to the sock itself. It  could be that the elastic of the sock is what you're allergic to. You said it wasn't under the whole sock, just at the line.

It isn't just at the sock line, in fact if I wear really short socks, it still shows up right above the ankle.

You are probably having an allergic reaction to that type of sock. The same thing happens to my friend.

Some people are very sensitive to laundry detergents and fabric softeners. Try using the perfume and dye free products. If you are still having a problem after that, you may be allergic to cotton. I am allergic to cotton trees but have never had a problem with things made from cotton.

Maybe you should try an organic approach on socks, some organic clothing stores sell specially made socks. It might help...

I just got new socks and I thought it was the cause of an itchy rash around my ankles and then my calf. But then two days later, I started getting itches near my thighs on up to may stomach and arms. Can rashes that start in one place spread like that even though there is not contact or could this be something completely different?
