Milk thistle is a common liver protectant use in veterinary medicine.  There are several other medications that can be used to help protect the liver--these may not be needed if your dog is not showing clinical signs.  The liver filters the blood and breaks down dietary products and toxins--its function makes it susceptible to inflammation.
If the ALT does not decrease with treatment then the next step would be ultrasound followed by biopsy.
Consult with your veterinarian about your dog's case.  They have all the information and will be able to give you the best advice.  Discuss other treatments like milk thistle to protect the liver and ask if your veterinarian would feel these may benefit your dog.
