If you are referring to the AST and ALT levels within the liver, then the ranges for each of these measurements is quite large. For the AST levels, anything between five and 40 is regarded as normal. For the ALT levels, anything between seven and 56 is regarded as normal. Based on these measurements, there would appear to be nothing dangerous about this level.

However - it is very important to remember that we are not a professional medical organization and deeply encourage that you take these questions to your doctor or to another medical professional. They will be able to answer your questions much more thoroughly than we can.

The liver is an important part of our body and is responsible for a number of tasks. The basic functions of the liver include:

  • Extracting toxins from the blood
  • Creating glucose for the body
  • Processing nutrients and minerals
  • Creating important proteins like clotting factor

It is suggested that any levels exceeding the range on either AST or ALT is not necessarily a reflection of liver damage. This damage could have been caused by other diseases that the body is suffering or has suffered from.

  • What do elevated levels mean?

It is very important to note that any elevation in these levels does not automatically mean that the person has disease of the liver. Elevated AST and ALT levels can result from other factors such as damage to the muscular system.

It cannot be emphasized enough that we are not a professional medical organization and therefore greatly encourage anybody with any further questions to consult their doctor or other medical professional.
