Head lice are one of the most common ailments across the globe, especially among younger children. When your children are at school they are in contact with a large number of children so if one child is infected there is a large chance that a vast number of other children are likely to be infected too as they are in such a close proximity to each other. There are a number of proven methods that can be used to eradicate the head lice but bleach is certainly not one of them. Bleach is an extremely harmful substance and can cause a great deal of damage to the skin, especially a child’s skin as it tends to be much more sensitive than an adult's. Under no circumstances should you be using any type of bleach to try and cure head lice. You should be able to find a number of different treatments on offer at your local pharmacy or a local supermarket. However, if you find that the treatments that you have been prescribed by your doctor or physician are not working, it may be that the lice have built up immunity to the treatment. This is nothing to worry about, there are some natural treatments that can actually remove the lice and kill them off. Some of the best ones to use, especially on your children are Neem Oil, Tea Tree Oil, Karanja Oil and even any mayonnaise that contains olive oil can actually work extremely well. As these are natural oils, there is no way that the lice can build up an immunity to them.

Some of these answers are partially correct. On the market is RID and NIX, both will kill live Lice in the hair. They DO NOT kill nits (the lice eggs). You need to remove the nits (eggs attached to the hair shaft) by hand manually. Once the shampoo is used you should not rewash the hair for up to 2 days. The nits that you might miss removing can still hatch. Residue from the shampoo might still be able to kill the emerging Lice (called nymphs).  You do need to do a second RID or NIX treatment in about 7 days to kill any lice from the eggs that you could have missed. You can also use Cetaphil Gentile Cleanser as a hair treatment (instead of the mayo home remedy) - 3 days after the first RID/NIX treatment coat DRY hair with Cetaphil (available at any store - supermarket/CVS/Walgreens in the body wash isle). Make sure you coat the scalp first by using a hair coloring bottle to get in there layer by layer. Then coat all the hair with the rest. Long hair would take about 8-10 oz. The hair should be completely soaked with it and gooey. Leave on for 2-5 min. (I did 10 min for my daughter). Then use a rattle comb to comb out the cleanser and work your way up to be able to use a nit comb through the hair. You'll be surprised how many more nits and dead lice will come out. Discard the cleanser of course you just combed out.  Now you need to use a dryer and completely dry the Cetaphil cleanser left onto the hair. COMPLETELY. This seals any remaining nits in kind of plastic cocoon. They are deprived of oxygen and will then die (96% effective).  After 8-10 hours you can wash it out of your hair, then do a rinse of white distilled vinegar and warm water. Go through the hair again and remove any nits you will find (the vinegar help dissolve the glue/cement like substance that the nits are attached to the hair shaft with).  Then you can repeat the RID or NIX at the 7-10 day mark from the first RID/NIX treatment. One note:  If you or your child has asthma or Ragweed allergies, the RID/NIX shampoos trigger these allergies!!! You could use the Cetaphil which is non-toxic from the start as an option (I would do every 3 days for about 2 weeks based on the lifecycle of Lice).  I have asthma and Ragweed allergies but my daughter does not.  It did cause me to be very sick for 3 weeks, using my inhaler and taking Allergy meds around the clock but it was worth it for me. But if you have severe allergies call your doctor first.

Just FYI - Mayo and other home remedies basically smothers the LIVE LICE only. Stops them cold in their tracks so you can then comb out with a nit comb. But these remedies do nothing for the nits. So if you go with the home remedy route you need to use every few days for a min. Of two weeks to keep getting any hatched Lice out again. The possibility of infecting a family member with live Lice or bringing it back into school is much higher than other remedies but they can still work if you are diligent with them and check you child everyday.

You need to use lice shampooh (RID) on your hair and your daughters. If you have any dogs or cats they will need to be bathed in flee and tick shampooh. All bedding needs to be washed, all furniture needs to be sprayed with the rid lice spray made for fabrics. All stuffed animals, and toys that are made of fabric need to be put in air tight plastic bags for a couple of weeks to kill the lice. All their friends parents, and teachers should be told as well to prevent your child from spreading them and possibly getting them again from a friend or classmate. Mayo, peanut butter, lotion and several other home remedies can be used on the hair and it will smother the live lice, but only the rid kills lice and eggs.

Bleach is very caustic and should never be applied to your hair.
There is a lice treatment called , NIX, that works so well that it even kills the lice eggs. No need to re-treat after ten days, as some treatments require. You will still have to use a lice comb to get the eggs to unattach from the hair.
As stated by all above, you must treat your whole house. Linens must be washed in hot water and put into a dryer. Furniture and carpets must be sprayed with lice killing spray.

I would not use bleach on my hair or on my child's hair. Go get some Rid. And wash ALL of your bedding and pillows in HOT water. Don't forget to use the nit comb to comb out all of the nits or the lice will be back in a week or so

They do make a special lice shampoo.. I'm not sure about bleach. I wouldn't use it on my head personally.  The Lice shampoo is called Rid.  And don't forget about bedding and pillows wash all that before she gets back in it.

Bleach would ruin hair.Use an anti lice shampoo from the over the counter medicines. also you can use dettol it kills the lice and nits for sure but will make the hair dry and frizzy for days. Apply good hair oil to soften them after that.

By mom put a whole jar on my head she let me sleep for three hours at night then she woke me back up and BOOM no lice but if that doesn't work, then lice Love healthy hair and not to sound gross but don't wash your hair for a few days!!! And the other option is, shaving your head! I hope it doesn't go that far!!!!   Good luck Maci Bumstead.

I was wondering the same thing but I wasn't going to put it in my daughters hair I was wondering does it kill the lice on beds? Could you spray the matress with bleach water and will it kill the lice on the beds? I heart the same thing about RID that it is like feeding them they grow so fast with the RID. I am asking because my daughter has lice now. I think I wash her hair to much and they do love clean hair. I know that grease works (hair grease) I put that in her hair and they seem to be killing them. I am going to try the mayonaise trick that the internet says and yall say. I still wonder about the beds being sprayed with bleach water?

Bleach is a toxin, and you  will make your child sick if you use it. There are inexpensive shampoos that are made for lice, and they make combs that you can use too. Hope this helps, good luck to you.

I heard that you can put items(like clothes, pillows, blankets) in the dryer on high heat to kill the little buggers..

But lice need a host to stay alive.  They are not like fleas they do not burrow..

But remember you will need to be EXTREMELY cautious over the next 2-4 weeks to retreat to prevent re-infection.  If you need help with this you can call your local health department..
