Lumps found anywhere in the body are usually benign but specialist assessment by a doctor is always recommended, particularly if it is present for over 4 weeks. It is recommended that you keep an eye on any changes to the lump and report them to your doctor immediately. Soft lumps or swellings on the neck are fairly common and usually the result of enlarged lymph nodes which can be caused by bacteria or viral infections. A lymph node is a small, ball shaped organ of the immune system which are distributed throughout the body. They often become inflamed or enlarged due to infections such as a throat infection, an abscess or cyst. Antibiotics are usually prescribed for bacterial infections such as these. It could be an allergic reaction or something more serious such as the mumps, a salivary gland tumour, turberculosis, pharyngitis or Graves disease. Lymph nodes can also become enlarged due to life-threatening diseases such as cancer or HIV which is why it is vital to see a doctor. Another possibility is thyroid disease. The thyroid gland, a butterfly shaped gland in the lower part of the neck which releases hormones and helps the body control metabolism, is often known to produce a soft lump in the neck area as a result of thyroid disease. This can be the result of an underactive or overactive thyroid, an enlarged thyroid, inflammation or lumps in the thyroid or thyroid cancer. In this case, a radioactive thyroid scan would probably be used to help diagnostic and treatment. A swelling in the thyroid gland can lead to a goiter causing a dramatic increase in mass to the neck. Goiters are nearly always caused by an iodine deficiency but the risk is higher is you are female, over 40 and there is a family history of goiter.

Just read elsewhere - if you have a lump: GO GET IT CHECKED!!! It could be a number of things from cancer to a benign pain in the backside you got to get removed - don't waste time looking for answers here - I should know my dad had to go get TWO lumps checked on his neck/shoulder

I have a hump that come and goes...Doctors are retarded..they only know what drug to prescribe to mask the symptoms...see an Endocrinologist , because it's related to hormones, especially the thyroid.  I am taking a water soluble iodine supplement...Iosol Iodine.  After two weeks, my hair stop falling out, the fat pocket under my chin is gone and the hump went down.  I am also finally losing that horrible belly fat.  I am 47 and know that hormones are the key to a very long healthy life.  Don't listen to Doctors that have a minimal of 4 hours class on hormones.  And that's if that even took the class!

It could be Hashimoto's Disease. The camel or buffalo hump is a symptom. Also, less noticeable the face gets a little wider below the eye level, all this a gradual process. See and endocrinologist and insist on comprehensive blood tests and investigation as to the underlying cause if you're found to have hypothyroidism, don't let your family Dr. just treat the symptoms by giving you a pill. If you are diagnosed with Hashimoto's, learn about foods to stay away from specific to the disease and what's good for your body as far as natural supplements, as it can be different for you than those who have hypothyroidism from other causes and can be dangerous to take some of the same supplements that are fine for others with hypothyroidism.

What is the size of lump? Hard or tender? It can be swollen lymph node which can be due to infection. This is the reason that doctor giving you antibiotic. Another possibility can be cancer. So, don't take this lump easy and change your doctor if treatment with antibiotics does not work.

It sounds like a swollen gland or a little cyst. You probably have a little throat infection going on and swallowing can be sore. Sometimes it can feel as if someone has punched you in the jaw.  Your doctor will probably have treated thousands of similar cases. Nothing unusual about your symptoms. Don't worry, it can take a while to settle. :)

I have the same thing and I went to actaully three different doctor 's and they all tolded me that it was nothing to worry about. It was my verterbrates out of socket/dislocated..I still worry about it. That mabye they didnt do too much research to make it 100% sure it's nothing serious.. Mine are right by my verterbrate column. I don't know if yours are in the same spot. But you can only feel mines if I turn mu head and face it sideways. If you do find anything out.
