Kidneys don't break down protein. Kidneys filter the blood. Most usual protein in the urine is albumin. Urine does not contain albumin if kidneys are normal. Presence of albumin in the urine can be due to kidney disease which can cause hypoalbuminemia. This condition can cause facial swelling and generalized edema.
