When a person becomes autoimmune, he or she is said to have created or acquired antibodies against his or her own original intrinsic antigens. Autoimmunity is the process by which the immune system of a person builds up enough resistance in order to be able to attack the tissues that already exist within the body of a person. There are various types of autoimmune diseases. One of these autoimmune diseases is rheumatoid arthritis.

The attack on the body's existing tissues by the autoimmune system is usually a slow process. Hence most autoimmune diseases build up gradually over a period of time. The proper working of the immune system is possible only when the immune system is able to clearly identify such foreign substances as bacteria, viruses, parasites, slivers, etc.

It often mistakes the normal body tissue for this foreign matter and destroys the existing tissues in the body. For instance, when the human body fails to identify its own red blood cells (RBC) and destroys them, the person begins to develop a condition known in medical parlance as autoimmune haemolytic anaemia.
