for me anyway... Missing the opportunity to make friends is a downside.. I've missed the boat so many times because of it...

when people around my age are friendly towards me.. Its so hard to go up and say hi but if i manage to do so, i act giddy and shy at same time.. Not a good first impression :(

the only people i can socialize with are simple minded people or older people.  maybe im just not meant to have real life friends.

A major downside is interaction with "real" people....someone you can shake hands with or pat on the back.....someone to enjoy things with, dinner, a movie, coffee.....that's a huge downside.

I read that the physical symptoms of social phobia (anxiety) vary from one person to the next. When some approach a feared situation, their hands shake. Their hearts beat rapidly. Many experience abdominal distress. Some perspire or blush, or their mouth become dry. Then, too, many finds that it is unpleasant to contemplate sweating, stammering, or trembling in front of others.  “Imagining that others notice their nervousness makes people with social phobias still more anxious,” observes The Harvard Mental Health Letter. “They come to anticipate the resulting awkwardness and poor performance—an expectation that sets off further alarms when they approach feared situations.”
