Go to an old folks home and make some friends. You will hear some of the most amazingly happy and sad stories from people that will be happy to share with you.
Look for something that interests you and get involved in it.
I usually just grab a good magazine or book and go sit on the can a while and read and contemplate life in general. Works for me !
Volunteer some time at a soup kitchen or homeless shelter.
I used to drink and party to escape that feeling, but now I'm into meditation and computer art.
