It might be an allergic reaction or a bee sting in the mouth, they may also have gingivitis - a very severe case. I suggest going to that medical md site and checking it out or go to a pediatrician, Or they might have just eaten something they should not have eaten, household plants, animals, anything like that...think outside the box since they are a 2 year old child. Hope I helped - good luck hope they get better!!! Byebye

I realize this is an old post, but I ran across it and thought I'd share. This is a condition called Gingivostomatitis. Gingivostomatitis is common, particularly among children. It may occur after infection with the herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1), which also causes cold sores. If treated early, your child can get antiviral drugs that will shorten the virus. My 18mo. Old son had this and it was AWFUL. It was misdiagnosed as hand-foot and mouth virus. Be vigilant with your doctor about this!!
