There are a number of drugs that have been used for other things in the past, and that medical science is now discovering are effective for the type of pain caused by autoimmune disorders like fibromyalgia. If you want to stay away from narcotics, and you really do because they cause more harm then good, you might want to look into something like pregabalin (Brand Name: Lyrica) or Cymbalta. They've proven to be pretty efficient for neuropathic pain, which is the largest cause of distress from fibromyalgia. The side effects are usually pretty tame, and they don't wreak havoc on your cognitive abilities. Cymbalta is actually a combination of drugs, and has been used to treat both depression and symptomatic components of diseases that affect the nerves. I like it.
However, the best medicine you can apply to a disease like fibro comes from your brain. If you start to THINK yourself better, you actually begin to believe it after a while. You also expand your mind and gain more control over your physiology. Medicine can only do so much.

Analgesics. Acetaminophen (Tylenol, others) may ease the pain and stiffness caused by fibromyalgia. However, its effectiveness varies. Tramadol (Ultram) is a prescription pain reliever that may be taken with or without acetaminophen. Your doctor may recommend nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) — such as ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin, others) or naproxen sodium (Aleve, others) — in conjunction with other medications. Antidepressants. Duloxetine (Cymbalta) and milnacipran (Savella) may help ease the pain and fatigue associated with fibromyalgia. Your doctor may prescribe amitriptyline or fluoxetine (Prozac) to help promote sleep. Anti-seizure drugs. Medications designed to treat epilepsy are often useful in reducing certain types of pain. Gabapentin (Neurontin) is sometimes helpful in reducing fibromyalgia symptoms, while pregabalin (Lyrica) was the first drug approved by the Food and Drug Administration to treat fibromyalgia.
