Chickenpox is caused by a virus called Varicella zoster. This virus is also responsible for causing shingles. Chickenpox is highly contagious for those people who are not immune. Virus spread by direct contact with rash or droplets which are coughed or sneezed in the air by the infected person.  Fortunately, a vaccine is available and people who are vaccinated are usually immune to this virus.
