A polyp is also known as a Nodule. Singers frequently get nodules which is a build up of tissue and forms a small lump. They are usually non threatening but some singers like Whitney Houston have them removed. As a singer I was taught that nodules can form because the vocal cords are strained when speaking. In order to change this you need to push the sound of your voice through your face instead of pull it down onto your vocal cords.

Vocal chords is small growth in our throat behind tongue. It vibrates when we speak and sound is produced. Usually in throat infection, when tonsils swell, the vocal chord also swell. This swelling looks like polyp. Usually this happen to smokers. Take antibiotic for 5 days.

Nodules are not polyps and vice versa - straining ones voice from singing and/or talking can cause nodules...polyps can be caused by many things BUT NOT ALWAYS straining voice as this would affect both vocal chords whereas a polyp normally only appears on one of them (do a google image search)
