AIDS is a collection of symptoms and infections that results from specific damage to the immune system.

This is caused by Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), a condition where the immune system starts to fail thus leading to illnesses that are life threatening.

The three major causes of HIV are particles and virus within infected immune cells. The three major routes of transmission are unprotected sexual intercourse, contaminated needles and transmission from an infected mother to her baby at birth or through breast milk.

It is a retrovirus that primarily infects vital components of the human immune system. It progresses over time before progressing into AIDS. The average survival time after developing AIDS is around 9 months, although the rate of progression from HIV varies from a few months to anything yp to about 20 years.

HIV infection in humans is now considered to be a pandemic with AIDS having killed an estimated 25 million people since 1981 and about 38 million people living with the disease world-wide.
