There is less and less normal, functioning lung tissue as the mass of the cancerous tissue grows.  There is a falling level of oxygen and a rising level of carbon dioxide in the bloodstream.  The patient feels he can't breathe, that he can't draw enough breath.  Oxygen is given by mask, but that then contributes to a faster rise in carbon dioxide levels in the bloodstream.  In the end, the patient dies from suffocation.
