Shingles is a rash which follows a nerve route, so the pain can be bad at times. As a person who has both suffered and nursed others with the ailment I will tell you what worked great for me.  I am not sure if it has the same name in America but your doctor or pharmacist will know it. Its a topical anaesthetic spray called xylocaine. It not only eased my pain, but it soothed it because it feels cold and it also stopped any itching. It may not be the recommended drug or treatment of choice, but hey, it worked ok for me. :)
