Poly cystic ovarian syndrome is characterized by presence of more than 10 pearl like persistent cysts in the ovary. 5-7 cysts are normal in every woman. This condition can cause delay in periods, infertility and sometimes hair growth on upper lips, lower legs, thighs and abdomen. Exact cause of this condition is not known but it is said that high androgen production from the adrenal cortex can be causative factor. These androgen are converted in to estrogen and when there are high levels of estrogen then FSH is suppressed and LH is increased. This condition disturbs FSH and LH ratio causing delay in periods and absence of ovulation. These androgen also make the tunica of the follicle hard, so, ovulation is not possible and follicle become deposited on the sides of the ovary leading to poly cystic ovarian disease. There are no medicines available to treat this condition. Only surgery is the best answer which can help in conceiving but relapse of condition start after 2-3 months again.
