I just had this problem...or rather am going threw it at the moment. For almost 2 days puss and infection has been draining out. This morning I noticed something white in color, with a little pressure it started to come out. This is the core, and yes you need to get the core out. The core is more solid. I used tweezers to help remove the core, due to the fact that mine was very large. (about the size of a lima bean) Gross yes, but the pain is less now that the core is gone. Keep a clean bandage on it, clean it 2-4 times a day, with a anti-bacterial neosporine on it. It will heal in time. Good luck

My husband just had a boil on his buttock lanced by a surgeon, (he lanced 3 different places) was placed on antibodies, given pain pills (as this was extremely painful) and after 4 days the core - which was white in color about 1-2 inches long and skinny, came working out of his wound. The surgeon removed it - to make sure the entire core was removed. He said it was the entire core.... No reason for the boil - just something that happens. My husband is a nurse and I wonder if he picked up something at his place of employment.

The core is like a fuse and yes it must come out to rid one of the boil.

The core looks and feels like a piece of firm gristle from a piece of meat.  It needs to be removed or the boil will keep coming back in the same place.  It can be removed by a doctor or apply VERY soft pressure with two cotton squares that have been soaked in Tea Tree Oil when the boil Is almost flat and finished draining.  The core will usually surface and block the flow of puss and comes out of the opening.  You might need to help it out with some tweezers, but it will usually make its way out.
