Typically 8-20 years. Average could be 7-10 years. It varies per person. There is different types of medication that can help slow it down a little bit, but it will never stop it.
If you are caring for someone with dementia, possibly of the alzheimer's type, just remember to have a sense of humor. Try not to correct them too much. There is a book out that is called "Alzheimer's from the Inside Out" that I found helpful. As is/was talking with friends who have been through it. Good luck!
