Though depression itself cannot kill you, the side effects of the condition can have some very harmful effects to your health, and in some cases can lead to death, for instance loss of appetite. However, there have been some cases of death caused by a broken heart that is believed to be a type of depression. Death caused by a broken heart often occurs when a loved one such as a spouse dies and the husband or wife of that person is affected so badly by their demise that it causes death. Most of the cases when this has happened have usually been elderly couples, so taking this into account; it can be argued that it was the shock, more than depression that may have killed the other person, thus leaving this question inconclusive.
However, some psychologists have argued that depression is caused by maladaptive physiological changes in both your brain and body, which can cause serious health defects. This also effects the body from producing the right amount of neurochemical such as serotonin. Serotonin is especially important to the functioning of the body as this chemical helps to maintain a good pain threshold, a lack of this will make you feel more pain. Furthermore, it is this chemical that helps you sleep. If you experience low levels of serotonin then you will be less like to sleep. Sleeping is extremely important, because when your body is resting, it allows your immune system to repair, without it you would become more susceptible to illnesses.
So though depression itself cannot kill you, the side effects that it causes have been proven to be very damaging to your health.
I say yes because poor health is associated with depression, not eating, lack of energy(exercise)...and prescription pill can be become a problem with the possibility of addiction...
Yes, you can, there have been a few cases throughout history where one person has lost their lifelong partner, and it seems to be that when one who has been in a relationship that long, some people will give up the will to live. As with depression, and the loss of their partner, it really isn't clear if it's one and the same thing, or if the depression and the grief are both one factor, or two. Hope this helps.
Yes, you can die from depression. Depending on how severe it gets. Its not just the suicidal thoughts or loss of apitite, there's much more to it than that. When you are severly depressed you have symptoms such as, headaches, stomachaches and or other bodily aches, it takes your happy sun vitamins and makes them vanish, ul sars , (for women) it can make you have irregular periods, loss of interest that causes you to exclude yourself from the real world. All of these symptoms can increase in severity causing your body to stop producing whats good for you or you for yourself. Depression is a mindset, I believe if you try to help yourself God will help you the rest of the way. Try being a 17 year old with a severe case of PTSD.... You need hope! Love, Ali
No, you will not die because of depression, it is just state of your thoughts. You just need to talk your problems to your family and friends. They will guide you and give you correct direction. Although depression leads to other disorder like heart problems and blood pressure.
I have severe depression, panic disorder, and multiple personalities. Due to my depression, I can barely leave my house...some days I'll make myself so sick that I can't even get out of bed. So yes, depression can kill you, or at least severely damage your health...~ Alice X. R.
