There are four areas that symptoms or signs of autism can be classified into: - problems with social behaviour and interaction with others - problems with communicating with others - repetitive behaviour - limited interests Under each of these catergories there are various signs that could indicate your child has autism. At each "level" of a childs life the symptoms differ, but as your child is 4 years old currently some of them could be: - do not smile as much as others - do not look at people often - do not understand social environments and are "out of place" - not likely to approach someone they don't know - try to communicate without talking - unable to speak clearly i.e. - mumble - unable to "play" - problems with turning written material and symbols into speech - repetitive movements such as head nodding or body rocking - compulsive behaviour - wanting to always have and do things the exact same way - becoming obsessed with one particular thing - hurting themselves intentionally as well as many others. In terms of diagnosis, the "Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders" indicates that a child needs to have at least six symptoms in total, with at least 2 of them being problems with social behaviour and interaction with others, at least one of them to do with problems with communicating with others and at least one to do with repetitive behaviour. Ultimately, if your child is showing any loss of social or language skills and you are concerened, it is best to get your child to a professional so that they may help diagnose the issue. Good luck and I hope everything works out for you and your child.
Is it to late to tell my teenage son has what the Dr's and teachers call a "behavior" problem. My son has always been little different. I remember him in preschool he would on sit in the quiet area and play by himself. He has never really had any close friends. He has a problem learning at school. He now is 15 years old, I have been dealing with problems from the school since he was in the 2nd grade. He is now a sophomore in high school I have such a hard time even getting him to school. I have had a ekg on him that was fine, he's had testing for ADHD that was negative. I'm not sure what else to do or where to go. The dr's have also put him on meds. For depression those didn't help. I need someone to help me please.
My child is four years old he has autism and adhd and has most of these symptoms the behaviour side is the hardest part to deal with and he can be a very loving child but I often worry that there isn't enough help available for children suffering These conditions a lot of the time the parents are fobbed off with a lot of excuses and not enough help for the children suffering my son is due to start school in september has been diagnosed for over a year now and still don't know where I stand on education needs as all the health professionals dealing with my son still havent sorted it out witch is very distressing for me as I want my child to have just as good a chance at education as my other children he deserves the good start that every other child has.
