Please, go to the dr.  I am still fighting one that I didn't get attention for right away.  It started from a cavity and ended up turning into cellulitus in my face.  I ended up in the hospital for 5 days and had a picc line (long term iv) and received strong antibiotics ($1000 for 7 days) and was finally able to get a root canal.  Now it is starting to swell up again.  They had said that the infection was so bad (over a 2 day period) that it had gotten right next to my eye and almost hit my brainl  they don't even keep you in the hospital for 5 days when you have major heart surgery!!  Please, do not ignore this!!  The shot may be scary, but if you go in hospital for this they will give you 3-5 shots a day!!  Go to the dr!!

I wouldn't try anything on my own. I just had the same painful ordeal, and let it go way too long, untreated. For me, it only got worse, but I finally had to give in and go to the Dr., not my dentist. I'm sure you could use either. Anyway, I battled it into the 5th week alone, still took a shot and two bottles of relatively cheap antibiotics, and you will see a HUGE improvement just overnight.

The abcess actually needs to be drained by a doctor. I went to the ER like 2 days ago for the one I had on my lower left cheek.
