Without including a photo of the spots or giving any more information, it is difficult to give a specific answer. The symptoms you describe could just be a number of ulcers that have developed if you are run down or have been pushing yourself too far recently. Ulcers usually clear up within a few days. On the other hand, the spots could be a sign of oral thrush and you will need to see a doctor as soon as possible.

If you have any of the other symptoms usually associated with oral thrush, you will need to go to a doctor’s surgery without delay. These include:

•A burning or painful sensation on the tongue - you said that the spots are painful so this could be one of your symptoms.

•Any soreness of redness in the inside of the mouth. This may cause difficulty swallowing.
•Cracks or broken skin on the outside corners of the mouth. These could also look like cold sore infections. The medical term for this is angular cheilitis.

•An unpleasant taste in the mouth that may be either salty or bitter.

In addition, if the white spots can be wiped away from inside the mouth, this may be a further sign of oral thrush.

If left untreated, oral thrush could spread down into the throat and cause a lot of pain so it is always best to seek medical advice to get rid of the infection. It can usually be treated using antifungal medicines. These come in many forms including creams, tablets, powders and rinses.

Don't worry about it, I have had these and they go away, could be a calcified zit or a small cyst.  If it gets worse, like bleeding or growing, have it checked out, otherwise, it should fade on its own

The spot could also be a canker sore. Again it will just go away and I know it hurts. Try swishing salt water three times a day and see if that helps.

Our tongue has direct contact with whatever we eat or drink. You must have eaten something hot and spicy this is why you are facing the trouble in this regard. If you remind that what you have eaten then you would be able to guess that why you have got sores upon your tongue. Another thing is that sores are also a symbol of spoiled stomach. May be your stomach is not functioning that well.

This is why you have got sores on your tongue. May be you have some gastric trouble in your stomach. You should go for a test to check whether you have any stomach problem or not. It may be a simple gastric trouble to ulcer. So you should be efficient in taking good care of your self. Sore throats also come up due to bad eating habits. May be you are not brushing your teeth at regular basis. So also take good care of your mouth to get rid of this trouble soon. It is better to apply glycerine. It will give your release from this problem soon.

Ive had these spots before too and I went to a doc about it and he said that it was acidic fruits and veg that were causing it!!
So I avoided them, as well as, sour sweets and fizzy drinks. They've stopped coming as much but I still get them every couple months!
Still don't really know the real reason for them!

Sores on the tongue are symptomatic of one or more of many possible health conditions. You could have sores on your tongue as a result of a simple allergic reaction. If you have eaten something that you are allergic to, the immediate manifestation of the allergic reaction could be on the tongue, resulting in sores and bumps. Another reason for sores on the tongue could be a case of a viral infection called oral herpes simplex. Yet another reason could be canker sores. Both these conditions require immediate medical intervention as a delay can lead to a worsening of the situation.

Do not take the condition of sores on the tongue lightly, as it could be symptomatic of something really major and nasty, like tuberculosis. A person suffering from tuberculosis would also have sores on his tongue. Other medical conditions of which sores on the tongue are a symptom include syphilis and also possible bacterial infections. A problem with your immune system could also manifest in the form of sores on the tongue. The best option is to immediately consult a doctor and determine the exact cause, so immediate treatment can be started.
