Dialysis is a method of removing toxic substances (impurities or wastes) from the blood when the kidneys are unable to do so.  Truly it depends on the reasons for dialysis and the amount of damage that was caused her to need dialysis in the first place.  Often after drug overdose or toxicity, hemodialysis may be one treatment that can help the kidneys flush impurities form the body until the levels are low enough that the kidneys may handle the toxicity and resume functioning on their own (when they have not been too damaged by the event or condition).   In such cases the treatment can be temporary.

In cases where there are chronic disease (as in end stage renal disease for example) or acute renal failure, dialysis generally continues indefinitely as a treatment.
