Well, the virus that causes cold sores, painful swellings of the lips and nose that become encrusted and scab over, can be passed by kissing! However, diseases that are described as being sexually transmitted are passed from one person to another through full sexual intercourse.
The virus that causes cold sores is herpes simplex type I. This virus has a close relative, herpes simplex type II, does cause a sexually transmitted disease called genital herpes. The effects on the skin are very similar – a painful swelling blisters and erupts but in the region of the genitals rather than on the face.
Treatment with a drug called idoxuridine can help limit repeat attacks but, as in herpes infection in the lips and nose, the herpes simplex type II also stays in the body and erupts from its latent state at regular intervals. These recurrences can be triggered by stress, damage to the skin, other infections and emotional upset.

Cold Sores are tricky, there are a couple ways to get Oral Herpes, a lot of people have Oral Herpes about 80-90% of the population is walking around with it & don't even know, some people even contracted it as a child from kissing a relative, or some people get it from a partner, you have to be careful when you have Oral Herpes (HSV2) because if you give someone Oral sex when a cold sore is present you can you can pass Oral Herpes to them Genitally & then they will have Genital Herpes. I learned my lesson the hard way, I wasn't informed about herpes so I gave my partner Genital herpes & I feel so bad for that..
