The body has lymph nodes in different parts of the body. When you have an infection, the body sends blood cells to help fight the infection. The nodes nearest the infection can swell up, feel tender like a bruse. This is due to the extra blood cells and waste in that area. As the body kills off the bacteria or infection, the swelling will go down.
We have lymph nodes all over....the ones you might be familiar with are located on either side of the neck. They swell when we get a sore throat. The ones behind the ear can swell when there is an ear infection, abscessed tooth, sinus infection, cold.  Under the armpit are nodes that tend to swell with flu or infected cuts on arms. Nodes are also in the groin and can be very painful at times.
If the swelling doesn't go down in another week you might check with a doctor to see if your body needs a little help fighting the infection...like an antibiotic.

You need to describe the lump's appearance to get any meaningful information as  with the brief description above, it could almost be anything:

This may not be the cause of your problem but it rang a bell with me, A friend of mine experienced this when he was in his teens, the lump turned out to be an ingrown hair!  Which had coiled over a number of years under the skin to produce a rather painful bump.  Girls who wax and/ or shave will be familiar with these annoyances, so you may want a friend to check it out.  I would get your doctor t take a look though because without a visual it is hard to judge.

Other alternatives include:
A banine cyst or boil which may have been the result of a slight scratch you sustained without realising.
Increased glands due to a infection or a "run down" immune system
Dependant on other symptoms, it could be a genetic disorder or a disease.
Worse case scenario, its cancer,  but this is incredibly unlikely.

For alternative and more comprehensive diagnosis, please call NHS direct on 0845 46 47 (UK and EIRE only), or look at the following online tool which will give you a full listing of all possibilities:
symptoms.webmd.com, Your Doctor is the best person to judge, make an appointment ASAP and don't worry it's most probably the first two options, just don't take chances with your health.

Take care and vitamins!

It could be whats called a bakers cyst a lump that is painless but doesn't go away I have one in the same place it developed about 6 years ago after I had a very bad cold it has gone down in size but if I'm ever run down with an illness it swells again I wouldn't worry if your doctor has already checked it if your still not happy you could see a different doctor for a second opinion

I also had a lump just below my ear, and small pea-sized lumps just in back of my ear lobe.  I recently had a spider bite on my ear, and the doc said the lumps are lymph nodes that are swelled because the bite might have caused infection...I was put on antibiotics because the lymph nodes were not going down, and the antibiotics have helped.  I hope this helps someone else out who might be scared of lumps....go to doc and see if it might be infection on ear, inside ear, or head.

It is a cyst like type thing and if you put something like neutragina in it 3 times it will bring it to a head and then pop it it is going to smell bad but It will help this may take several weeks to make it go away.

It could be a swollen lymph node. If the doctor said that it was caused by an infection than I'm pretty sure it's a swollen lymph node. If she doesn't have any other symptoms, I wouldn't worry that much, because I have the same thing and it doesn't hurt or anything and I'm pretty sure I've had it for a long time, I didn't go to a doctor yet but I will soon.

If the lump is smaller than 1 cm and it hasn't grown anything within those 6 months, than it's probably not a tumour because a tumour grows.

I'm not a doctor, I'm only basing my opinion on several researches I did, so, if you really want to be sure that your daughter is fine, than you should go back to the doctor or you could ask for a second opinion.

I hope I helped in some way!

Take care, and I wish you and your daughter the best.

I have had lumps behind my ears for a while now. My doctor said they were caused by mosquito bites on top of my head. After a year they were still there. I talked to my doctor again. THis time she said some people are born with them. But I wasn't. They might have just stayed there after some bug bites. This might not help you, but I hope it does.

My son is nearly 2, and he has had a lump behind his ear, for 7 weeks now, noticed it xmas time, so he could of had it lot longer, it has gone down but it goes up too. Doc gave him antibiotics and it helped for him but not the lump, doctor said its the lymph nodes that isn't going to go away with help or its something else, so my son is going to have blood tests to see whats causing it. If its no worry, then Well leave it. Hes had colds too so that could be why its not going down, hes well within himself. So go for some tests if your worried. ;)

Its called a key llyod man people don't know about the real reason we as people gey key llyds it have nothing to do with how real or how fake your rings are it the tissue inside your ear beinging pushed out everytime you put in and out your rings. The key  llyod does not usually hurt but it will get bigger even over night . If touched at all it gets bigger there is no  meds that going to get rid of this you must go and have this  cut off. It does not hurt at all to have it cut and it really take  5 minutes/ just kno if you cut it off don't  put another hole in that ear for at least  1  year and if you do put a nother hole in there make sure you don't keep pushing the ring in and out I got mine cut off back in 01 and its just starting to grow now in 09

The lump any where on the body is condition of some problem and this problem has to be diagnosed before start of the treatment. The lump can be insect bite, abscess, infection due to bacteria or virus etc. It will be good to visit a doctor for differential diagnosis and treatment.

I had a bump behind my ear which was like a small pimple or tiny tiny hard bump and then it swelled up and became big, soft & squishy,  didn't leak or ooze and there is a little part of it that hurts when I touch it. It's right behind my ear, a little above my ear lobe. The first time I had it, I didn't go to the doc and it just went away, this time I have 2. The other one is on the crease between my earlobe and the side of my face. That one doesn't hurt but it has been a while and it still hasn't gone away!! The doctor said it was a cyst, but I don't think the doctors I see know anything.

As I recall 'lymphoma' is cancer/tumor in the lympnodes. Is that what the doctor said? Now tumors grow, if it's a tumor then it should be huge by now. It might just be tissue problem. If you are that worry take her back to the doctor and ask why it isn't going away. You got every right to be worried and concern. I wouldn't want that on my daughter either ok.

I got my ears pierced when I was 11 or 12 years old.  I have had small lumps behind my ears off and on, ever since.  Sometimes I sleep in my earrings and the posts of the earrings poke into my skin, causing little bumps.  The bumps do not hurt and they do not grow large, they're just small. Does your daughter have pierced ears?
Good Luck.

Its because your wearing a tight earing or because your taking your earing in and out so many times let the earing sit on your ear and apply all the med with the earing on and don't touch the earing a lot but make sure you keep your earing lose and circle around the lobe hole with the earing inside your lobe  every 2 hours so the hole can stay big and and perfect and if you still have the bump don't rub it pop it let it sit and it will go away..this is called small infection don't worry at all

If it's bigger than a pencil eraser, or if it is oddly shaped, you may have cancer. GO TO YOUR DOCTOR RIGHT AWAY! This can be SO bad!!
